Couch to 5k

Running for beginners, from Couch to 5k and beyond

Too many people have been turned off of running simply by trying to start off too fast. Their bodies rebel and they wind up miserable, wondering why anyone would possibly want to do this to themselves.
You should ease into your running program gradually. In fact, the beginners' program we teach is less of a running regimen than a walking and jogging program. The idea is to transform you from couch potato to runner, getting you running three miles (or 5K) on a regular basis in just two months.

Past my Best By Date?

I have been a competitive runner for over 30 years. That in itself should signal that perhaps it is time to throw in the towel; retire, start a book club, anything other than race. It's kind of like a gambling problem. I run, it hurts and it's slow(er). I try it again. It still hurts and it's still slow(er). Then one day I get a payoff. I have a great workout. I hit the times I used to hit and I actually feel good! So I continue and then the pattern repeats itself. These payoffs get fewer and further between.

Queen of the Virtual Mountain

My Quest to be Queen
by: Catherine DuBay

Just about 4 months ago I received a gift that changed my running life as I knew it. Under the Christmas tree was a GPS running watch from my husband. I didn’t really like learning that my “8 mile run” was really closer to 7, but I did like how they knew the pace, elevation and exact distance of our runs.

Secret Workouts

I admit guilt when it comes to shopping sprees where I may have spent a little more than I intended and thus brought the packages in the house when no one was looking-sttashed them under the bed until the coast was clear. Nothing major-just a few pairs of running shoes I probably didn’t need. Or maybe a cute little lululemon jacket that looks very similar to the other 7 black lightweight jackets in my closet. It’s not like I bought a car or major appliance without telling my husband…

The Purple Stuff

In over 20 years that I have managed this club I am not sure if I have received more grief than the recent beating I have taken over the new purple product in the showers! "Disgusting!", "Yuck!", "Feels like the YMCA". A tough crowd indeed!
