Dear Athlete-by Catherine DuBay

I have this (some say annoying) habit of asking people to tell me their top 3 things that surprised them or amazed them when reflecting upon a vacation, a new job, an epic run or bike ride, etc. So, as we prepare to send our oldest child off to college next month, I decided to ask myself that same question about the last 18 years raising kids. Catherine, what surprised you the most about raising kids?

How Cancer Cured my Holiday Stress-by Catherine DuBay

People talk about holiday stress and I feel sorry for them. The holidays do not stress me out at all. Other things stress me out; cooking, shopping, traffic, but not the holidays.

How Normal People Find Time to Workout-by Catherine DuBay

I know I am lucky because I live in Sonoma County. I have a great family. I am very healthy and I have great friends. I also have a great job as the manager at Montecito Heights Health Club & Spa in Santa Rosa. I come to work in sweats most mornings. I check emails, make my rounds talking with staff and members and then I go for a run. I clean up and then put my sweats back on, add a staff shirt and name badge and spend most of my day encouraging others to stay/get healthy.

5 Bad Exercise Habits

Not that any of our members have any bad exercise habits, but here they are just in case you were even thinking about it...

Why the health club is so unhealthy

Remember when your mother would say?
Don’t go outside without your coat…you will catch a cold

Or as my grandmother used to say to me:
You’re not running in this rain are you? You are going to get sick!”

And overheard so many times at the club:
"I am so sick that all I want to do is sit in the steamroom!"

Past my Best By Date?

I have been a competitive runner for over 30 years. That in itself should signal that perhaps it is time to throw in the towel; retire, start a book club, anything other than race. It's kind of like a gambling problem. I run, it hurts and it's slow(er). I try it again. It still hurts and it's still slow(er). Then one day I get a payoff. I have a great workout. I hit the times I used to hit and I actually feel good! So I continue and then the pattern repeats itself. These payoffs get fewer and further between.

My Quest to be Queen
by: Catherine DuBay

Just about 4 months ago I received a gift that changed my running life as I knew it. Under the Christmas tree was a GPS running watch from my husband. I had mentioned I might want one after running with friends that owned them. I didn’t really like learning that my “8 mile run” was really closer to 7, but I did like how they knew the pace, elevation and exact distance of our runs.
